How To Fill Your Cup First – Even When Life’s Chaotic

Let’s be honest: life doesn’t exactly roll out a red carpet for self-care.
Some days it feels like you’re sprinting from the moment you open your eyes—school runs, work demands, endless to-dos, and tiny humans needing everything, all at once. So when people say, “Just take time for yourself,” it can feel… unrealistic.
But here’s the truth: you can fill your cup, even in the chaos. In fact, you need to.
Because when your cup is empty, you’re running on fumes. And nobody can thrive like that—not you, not your family, not your dreams.
So, how do we actually do it?
Here are 5 gentle, real-life-friendly ways to put yourself first, even on the messiest days:
1. Start Small (Tiny, Even)
Forget the hour-long baths and spa days (unless they’re doable—then go for it!).
Self-care can be five minutes of deep breathing, a hot coffee enjoyed while it’s still hot, or a post-it note with a kind word stuck to your mirror.
The magic happens in the moments you claim back.
2. Stack It Onto What You’re Already Doing
Brushing your teeth? Add an affirmation.
Driving to school? Blast a song that makes you feel alive.
Doing the dishes? Light a candle and romanticise the heck out of it.
You don’t need more time—you just need to sprinkle a little love into what’s already happening.
3. Ask: What Do I Need Right Now?
Before you scroll, before you say yes, before you fill another plate—pause.
Ask yourself: What do I need right now?
Sometimes it’s water. Sometimes it’s silence. Sometimes it’s to say no.
Listen to her. She knows.
4. Let Go of the Guilt (It’s Not Helping Anyone)
You are not selfish for needing time to recharge. You are human.
Filling your cup isn’t taking away from your family—it’s how you show up for them with presence and patience.
And the more your children see you honouring yourself? The more they learn to do the same.
5. Plan One Non-Negotiable Moment for YOU Each Day
Maybe it’s your skincare routine. Maybe it’s journaling after bedtime.
It doesn’t have to be long—it just has to be yours.
Protect it like you would anything else on your calendar. Because you’re just as important.
You Don’t Need a Perfect Life to Practise Self-Care
You just need moments. Little ones. Consistent ones. And a reminder that you matter just as much as everyone else on your list.
So here it is: You are allowed to come first. Even when life’s messy. Especially when it is.
Go fill that cup, beautiful.
